The Play by Play

Today is the big day, Alasdair is in surgery right now actually. Initially he was expected to go under the knife until late afternoon, but they had an unexpected opening and he got bumped up. They're going to attempt to anesthetize him via epidural, assuming his sacrum and everything are fully developed. I guess occasionally hip structure is not quite where it should be with children this young.

That's Plan A, if it doesn't look good they go to Plan B. But I forgot to ask exactly what that was, I think they gas him like they did in radiology the other day.

The procedure is expected to take 2.5 - 3 hours. Most time consuming is a series of biopsies to find exactly where along his colon the aganglionic tissue meets the good ganglionic tissue. That's where they will cut. Each biopsy takes about 20 minutes to complete and gets results back from the pathologist that is standing by. After that they will perform the pull-through and he'll be back in recovery lickety-split.

I'll try to update later this evening with positive news.
